The Lexington Philharmonic will bring the worlds of construction, engineering and music together in its 2013-14 Music Builds Discovery concerts for elementary and middle school students. The concerts will take place on Oct. 23 at 10 and 11:30 a.m. at the Lexington Opera House and on Oct. 25 at 10 a.m. at the EKU Center for the Arts in Richmond. This season’s Music Builds Discovery concerts will draw parallels between the making of music and the building of a city. Students will explore architecture and engineering through the lens of orchestral music. With the use of multimedia projections, the building blocks of the orchestra will come to life through video demonstrations of global architecture and musical masterworks. This is the first season LexPhil will perform a Richmond concert. This comes after two years of selling out their school performances in Lexington. LexPhil provides bus and ticket subsidies to encourage attendance from rural districts and underfunded schools. The concerts are part of LexPhil’s new Music Builds initiative. Music Builds aligns with the national “STEAM” movement, which emphasizes the importance of integrating the Arts into Science, Technology, Engineering and Math education. According to a press release, management of the orchestra believes “it is increasingly important to provide opportunities for music integration in the classroom as state standards have become more focused on the testing of core subjects and arts education budgets have declined.” Tickets are still available to school groups for $ 4 per student and $ 5 per chaperone for the Lexington Opera House shows by calling LexPhil at 859-233-4226. Tickets for the EKU Center concert are available by calling the EKU Center Box Office at 859-622-7469. From LexPhil
